Winter wellness – is a cold messing with your mojo?

It’s the absolute worst coming down with a cold right at the time you are supposed to be baby making. You’d rather sleep right, but the deed must be done. Sometimes a boost to your immune system is all you need to give your body the tools you need to get back to business. When your immune system is weak, you catch everything that goes around and then some. Getting back in balance can make you feel stronger year-round and not waste a single month when TTC.

What causes a low resistance to sickness?

There are many factors that can cause you to be more susceptible to illness.
• poor diet and nutritional deficiencies (especially vitamin D)
• Stress
• Inadequate rest
• Lack of exercise

When your body is fighting just to take care of basics, your immune system may fail to recognise and respond to the early warning signs of infection. 

What makes people sick?

The common cold is caused by a virus, as are some types of flu. Stomach ailments, ear infections and sinus issues are often caused by bacteria. 

Antibiotics only work on bacterial infections, and sometimes the side effects are worse than the illness. By keeping your body healthy, you can help fight off sickness in the early stages and avoid the worst. Thankfully, there are plenty of natural ways to increase your immune defences against some viruses and bacteria.

What supplements are best?

There are many natural treatments you can use to boost your immune defences in preparation for and during the winter months.
• Elderberry is herb that can help reduce cold and flu symptoms such as fever and runny noses. 

• Andrographis is an herb which has been shown to work similarly to paracetamol for reducing sore throat and fever. When combined with zinc, it can sometimes shorten an illness and get you back on your feet (or back :;) ) sooner.

• Reishi, cordyceps and coriolus are a few safe types of medicinal mushrooms. They can tackle viruses that often cause winter colds and flus and help beat back chronic infections so your body can recover. 

• Vitamin C, D and zinc are excellent options for supporting your immune system.

• Probiotics can bolster the 70-80% of your immune system which depends on a healthy gut. Look for Lactobacillus acidophilus NCFM, Lactobacillus rhamnosus HN001 and Bifidobacterium lactis HN019. A must if you have had a course of antibiotics. 

What else can be done to promote health? 

Diet is key – supplements can help, but your day-to-day food intake has an enormous impact on your body’s health. 

Focus on:

• Preparing Mediterranean style recipes that include plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables, nuts, seeds, fish and lean meats. 

• Cutting down on inflammatory and mucus forming foods, such as dairy, sugar, white breads, cakes and soft drinks. 

• Avoiding excessive alcohol and caffeine and making sure to replace these with water to stay hydrated.  Immune boosting herbs and nutrients and a healthy diet can help you prevent many illnesses, shorten the duration of the ones you do get, and make you feel better year-round.
